Officials stated Wednesday that a two-year-old gorilla at the Calgary Zoo Gorilla Death last week due to human error.
Colleen Baird, the zoo’s director of animal care, health, and welfare, stated, “Our beloved two-year-old western lowland gorilla Eyare passed away from life-ending injuries she sustained after being struck by a hydraulic door.”

On November 12, at around nine in the morning, Eyare was wandering from bedroom to bedroom in the back of the home, mingling with other gorillas.
In order to remove Eyare from other troop members for a one-on-one animal training session, a member of the gorilla care team accidentally operated the wrong door, which caused the gorilla to be struck by the door and suffer severe head injuries.
Eyaredie’s injuries occurred just after 9:30 a.m., but the veterinary staff started life-saving procedures right away, including cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
“These findings are not taken lightly, and we are continuing to carry out comprehensive reviews to find any possible opportunities to improve safeguards, staff training, and animal care procedures,” Baird stated.
The executive director of Animal Justice, an advocacy organisation for animal legislation that works to strengthen Canada’s legal safeguards for animals, is Camille Labchuk.
