Prince’s only full sibling, Tyka Nelson, dies at age 64.

Prince’s only full sibling, Minneapolis musician Tyka Nelson, passed away on Monday at North Memorial Health in Robbinsdale, Minnesota, according to President Nelson, Prince’s son, who confirmed the death to The Associated Press. She was sixty-four.

President Tyka Nelson stated that he does not anticipate knowing the cause of death “for a couple of days.”

Born in 1960, two years after Prince, to jazz musician John L. Nelson and Mattie Della Shaw, Nelson was a singer-songwriter who released four albums during her career, beginning with “Royal Blue” in 1988. Her biggest singles from that album were “Marc Anthony’s Tune,” which peaked at No. 33 on Billboard’s Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs list after 11 weeks, and “L.O.V.E.”

“The album is basically about love relationships between a man and a woman,” she said at the time, as reported by the Minneapolis Star Tribune.

It’s an alternative to purple, which is her brother’s color of choice. The funniest part about their connection, she remarked, is when people ask, ‘How does it feel to be Prince’s sister?’ In reality, they have no idea what they’re saying. Ever since I arrived on this planet, I have been Prince’s sister.

Prince and the so-called Minneapolis sound were “far removed” from her “Royal Blue” album, which the Associated Press described as “mostly adult-contemporary or easy-listening” fare.

Five grandkids and two sons, President and Sir, survive Nelson.

In a statement, President Nelson shared. “The family has requested that you look after one another in place of flowers, and the services will be private.”

Tyka Nelson was supposed to retire and play a final show at the Dakota in downtown Minneapolis in June, according to the Star Tribune. She didn’t take the stage because she was sick. She said a few days prior to the performance that she was working on a memoir and had a mixtape in the works.

In 2016, Prince passed away at his Minneapolis residence after an unintentional fentanyl overdose. He was fifty-seven.
